Krill Oil ~ a pure and natural source of essential fatty acids and antioxidants to help maintain a healthy cardiovascular system and support normal cognitive function. WHAT IS KRILL? Krill is a small shrimp-like crustacean. It is the most important zooplankton species associated with the sea ice and plays a key role in the Antarctic food chain. In Japanese and Korean homes and restaurants krill has been an ingredient of seafood recipes for many years due to its high nutritional value and excellent level of protein. As well, krill is widely used to feed marine life in aquariums, large and small. However, in the last few years, there has been increasing interest around the globe in regard to the usage of krill as a nutraceutical. Each krill consists of about 15% high quality protein containing vital amino acids and about 3% fat and vitamins. It also supplies minerals such as iron, phosphorus, and calcium. It is very nutritious and is a natural source of energy. Krill are caught in the clear Antarctic Ocean and are processed within one hour and packed on board specially equipped ships to ensure freshness, taste and superlative quality. SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE It has been speculated that harvesting krill in the Antarctic has led to a decrease in the krill population and threatened the important ecosystem made up of penguins, seabirds, seals and whales. However, due to careful guidelines developed by the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), fisheries only catch approximately 100,000 tons of krill per year. This amount is well below the potential harvest allowed of 4 million tons per year. The mandate of the CCAMLR is to strive to “implement a holistic, or ‘ecosystem approach’ to the management of marine living resources in the Southern Ocean.” Are all fish oils equal? What is so special about krill oil? Krill oil naturally contains omega-3 fatty acids, such as EPA and DHA, partially carried by phospholipids. As well, with krill being at the bottom of the food chain, heavy metal levels are very low, even without molecular distillation. Each gram of Antarctica Select contains at least:
